Sephora Play! Review

It's been over a year since I subscribed to Sephora's Play! box, so it seemed like a good time to do a review of the box. May 2016 was my first delivery and I'm still subbed, so I guess that says something is right! Along with Play!, I have subscribed to Allure Beauty Box, Popsugar Must Have and the new Nylon Beauty Box.

In the past 13 months, I've purchased the full size of at least 11 products:

  • Urban Decay Perversion Mascara (link)
  • Drunk Elephant T.L.C. Framboos Glycolic Night Serum (link)
  • GlamGlow THIRSTYMUD Hydrating Treatment (link)
  • Laura Mercier Caviar Stick Eye Color (link)
  • Urban Decay All Nighter Long Lasting Setting Spray (link)
  • Youth To The People Age Prevention Superfood Cream (link)
  • Tarte FRXXXTION Stick Exfoliating Cleanser (link)
  • Clinique Pep-Start Hydroblur Moisturizer (link)
  • Tarte Rainforest of the Sea Quench Lip Rescue (link)
  • Kate Somerville ExfoliKate Intensive Exfoliating Treatment (link)
  • Belif Hungarian Water Essence (link)

Now that's not to say all of these products are HG or ones I use daily. However, some of these have introduced me to brands I wouldn't have tried and I have found HG products from that introduction.

A large critique of the Play subscription is due to the variations they send out. As a Play member, you have a profile that you fill a quiz out to populate. They use this information to identify which box for the month (of roughly 5) is best suited for you. However, when you find out what was delivered in the other boxes you didn't receive, it's easy to have FOMO or just generally be jealous of what you didn't get.

It's easy to be upset when you don't receive all the products you want, but for a $10 box with the samples you receive, it's not too bad. It's a great way to be introduced to new brands from Sephora that you might not try on your own. Plus it's exclusively mid-to-high end products - no drugstore brands. The value is almost always between $30-$45 a box. And that doesn't even count the joy from getting a box in the mail each month! It's like Christmas 12 times a year.

Along with the products, you also get these really cute bags each month. They're not as durable as the bags you get from Ipsy, but they're still really great. They work well for quick easy bags to move products around. I use one for products to take to the gym. Others I've used for traveling! I can throw some of my basics in a bag and drop it in my carry-on for flying. Easy and cute. Some people have even repurposed them as sachets! Just use some eucalyptus, rose, vanilla or lavender with some rice and tie off your bag. It's perfect for keeping clothes in a drawer or your closet smelling fresh!

For $10 a month, I still think it's one of the best value subscription boxes you can get. They currently have spots open, so sign up if you haven't! As long as you're a Beauty Insider, it's available to you. And keep your eyes peeled, cause they seem to be throwing the idea around for a VIB Rouge Beauty Box.
